Couldn't Have Said It Better Myself!

Prime Time Sports with Bob McCown: Wednesday, October 14, 2009 (5:00-7:00)
Host: Bob McCown
Co-Host: Stephen Brunt
Guests: Co-author of "Leafs AbomiNation", Michael Grange; Claude Lemieux, NHL player and "Battle of the Blades" contestant; Peter Keating, writer for ESPN The Magazine; NBC and Versus hockey analyst, Ed Olczyk; George Stroumboulopoulos, host of "The Hour" on CBC.
McCown: "I'm developing a book that talks about the life and times in this stupid business and how the suits have tried to mess up my life."
Brunt: "That hasn't happened recently to you has it?"
McCown: "Not in a couple of hours, but I've been here."
"An announcement is forthcoming…it's up to them to make whatever announcement they wish…we’re not sure why we're not on, but it doesn't matter why we're not on, but it's up to them (Sportsnet)…but it's going to be okay…just relax!" quipped McCown during the show.
Regardless of all the speculation going around the internetsssss these days, it seems as there will be something different, new and fresh happening with Prime Time Sports and Sportsnet. My best guess is that Sportsnet is going to take McCown and company out of the Fan590 studio and bring him into the Sportsnet studios which would lend to better camera's, better graphics and video support to conversations that take place. The simulcast will still take place on Fan590, but Sportsnet will be the base, not the Fan590, as it is now. So instead of a radio show on tv, it will be a tv show on radio. This would bring PTS up to a level to compete with TSN (Again, this is all in my mind!)
So, McCown has 3 upcoming books (all in his head) which are:
- McCowns life and times
- A retrospective of Prime Time Sports (evidently a picture book?)
- ???
…although not much has been said about Jim Kelley's departure from Prime Time Sports, Brunt did mention it by saying "now that John Shannon is a sidekick…" So it's pretty well confirmed. Kelley's out. Shannon's in.
Strombo interview was great…wish he'd be on more and can't wait for the Fleury interview on the Hour.

Guests: Hockey analyst for Rogers Sportsnet, Nick Kypreos; Gregg Zaun, Tampa Bay Rays catcher and Rogers Sportsnet post-season baseball expert; Damien Cox from the Toronto Star; Sports Illustrated NFL writer, Don Banks; Duane Forde, CFL game analyst for TSN.
After being mysteriously absent on Monday, McCown was back on Tuesday.
Not a peep about the current Sportsnet-Prime Time Sports issue on PTS - either via McCown himself, or on all of the teasers at the intro of the show. VERY interesting. I'm not entirely sure how many listeners knew (or even care) about the current Sportsnet situation. Heck, even with Kypreos in studio, McCown didn't take any shots…maybe it's me, but I could sense his mind was elsewhere tonight.
Word also broke earlier this afternoon that Prime Time Sports will continue to be on Rogers: LINK.
I wonder what those "internal" issues were all about? McCown has always been faithful and truthful to his listeners, and I hope he can divulge a bit about what has happened on his next show.
There's no way Bobcat is going anywhere from the FAN590. The only question is whether Rogers can continue to take the hits from McCown, particularly with the Olympics around the corner. My question is simply, why now? What has happened since September that has the big-wigs worried?
As McCown said in an interview with the Toronto Star about being replaced: "God, no. It never occurred to me. I don't know if it's ego or self-confidence ..." LINK
Are you like me? Getting tired of being dicked around by Sportsnet as a loyal PTS viewer?? …or as a radio/podcast listener, do you not care?
Sure beats talking about Phoenix, eh?

McCown out of Sportsnet?? (part deux)

The issue I have with this potential decision is the fact that Sportsnet continues to treat the Prime Time Sports audience like leftovers. Prime Time Sports is cheap programming. One day it's on and the other off. For those 'viewers' watching at home who set their pvrs to watch the show (like myself!), it's frustrating to come home, flip on the recorded show, only to find alternative programming that has been recorded.
The one thing that isn't being discussed is that this "decision" is coming after an in depth discussion about Rogers last Friday where McCown challenged Rogers to put up or shut up with the Jays payroll for next year. Specifically he stated that their could be a fan revolt against Rogers if the Jays aren't competitive next year and the fanbase feels Rogers is to blame. You mean to tell me it's a coincidence that Sportsnet is choosing NOW to evaluate McCown, a mere 4-6 weeks after extending the Prime Time Sports brand to 2 hours? Us viewers ain't that stupid!
Sportsnet: why don't you fish or cut bait with Prime Time Sports and be honest with your viewers?
McCown, as always, you know you have an open invitation to speak here.

One of the readers commented that Bob seems "bored by it all." I think that is a fair assessment. I get the sense especially over the past year, that Bobcat is going through the motions. Maybe it's Kelley (although he'd never say it.) McCown seems genuinely engaged in the discussion when Brunt is around. Their conversations are truly legendary! In fact, the discussion that often occurs from 5:00-6:00 between the two are often McCown's most energized discussion.
What do you guys think? I'll open the comments for the next two weeks and see if people around here wish to discuss...if not, bye bye comments!
